Institute of Zen Studies
The Institute of Zen Studies
became a reality in 1982 when Omori Sogen Rotaishi
and the
Daihonzan Chozen-ji incorporated the Institute as a
non-profit organization. The Institute complements and
supports the mission of Daihonzan Chozen-ji to bring about
world peace by developing true compassion and right
understanding. This is achieved with clarity of perspective
and insight into "what is" through Zen.
Mission
The
mission of the Institute of Zen Studies is to make Zen more
accessible to modern society.
What
is Zen?
Zen is a method of
self-development that offers principles of concentration,
breathing, and posture basic to the development of deeper
awareness.
Origin
The Institute of Zen Studies (IZS) was incorporated as a
non-profit organization in 1982 by Omori Sogen
Rotaishi,
founder of Daihonzan Chozen-ji, to promote a rounded
educational program about Zen and its related fields in the
West.
The basic form of the Institute of Zen Studies came from
Omori Rotaishi in order to carry out the will of his
teacher, Seisetsu Seki Roshi, which was to carry out the
true meaning of "Hakkou Ichi-u" (Universal
Oneness).
However, the foundation and tenants for this form can be
traced back to early Buddhist teachings and Japanese
history. The early Buddhist teaching is documented in the Yuima
kyo (Vimalakirti Nirdesa Sutra) which talks of how to
bring things that have fallen apart together again. The
background for the creation of the Institute's vision and
mission is described in an article
by Hosokawa
Roshi from the writings and thoughts of Omori Sogen Rotaishi.
